That will not be so for long, if Merloni Elettrodomestici, Europe's third biggest maker of domestic appliances, has its way. The company has teamed up with Enel, the Italian electricity supplier, to let consumers lease washing machines in their homes and pay for the equipment on the basis of how much they use them.
